Protests erupt outside Kasba Police station as 3 arrested in alleged Kolkata college gang rape
A tragic accident occurred at the cultural fair in Gosaba, South 24 Parganas, when a young woman fell from a moving ferris wheel and later died. The incident took place on the final day of the five-day event organized by the Kumirmari Gram Panchayat, which included cultural performances and various attractions. Three young women from the nearby Kumirmari village had been riding the electric-powered ferris wheel when the accident occurred. According to local sources, the three were suddenly thrown off the ride while it was still in motion.
Sayantani Mondal, one of the women, was critically injured in the fall. She was immediately taken to Bellevue Nursing Home in Kolkata. Despite efforts to stabilize her, Mondal succumbed to her injuries shortly after her arrival. The other two women, whose identities have not been disclosed, were reportedly unharmed in the incident. Authorities are working to determine whether the accident was caused by a mechanical failure, rider error, or another factor, such as distraction during the ride.
The owner of the ferris wheel, Amal Baidya, has been arrested by the police as part of the investigation. The police are examining the ride for potential mechanical faults, including the condition of the safety restraints and operational mechanisms. Additionally, there are reports that police are considering whether the victims may have been attempting to take selfies, but this remains unconfirmed. The investigation is ongoing, and authorities are conducting a thorough inquiry to establish the exact cause of the fall.
